RB22 & Timber Hoarding Installation in Leeds

The Brief

Our client required a robust and secure perimeter solution around a temporary works compound whilst works were being carried out on a high rise building in Leeds. Due to restricted space and the need for clear site demarcation, a combination of crash tested barriers and block supported timber hoarding was specified to create a safe, compliant, and visually neat construction compound.

The solution needed to provide:

  • Perimeter protection and segregation from pedestrians and passing traffic
  • A stable compound area for plant, materials, and workforce access
  • Compatibility with site safety requirements and health and safety best practice

The Challenge

The Leeds site posed several operational and logistical challenges:

  • Tight city centre location requiring space efficient perimeter solutions
  • Delivery vehicles and pedestrians in proximity requiring clear, protected boundaries
  • Requirement for temporary hoarding that could be securely supported without intrusive ground fixings
  • Neat finish required to wrap the timber hoarding around the RB22 barriers

The Solution

To meet the client’s requirements, we installed the following system:

  1. RB22 Water Filled Crash Barriers
  • Provided a stable base and crash tested perimeter protection system
  • RB22 units are designed to absorb and deflect vehicle impact. When water filled they weigh up to approximately 600kg each, making them ideal for urban site protection
  1. Block Supported Timber Hoarding
  • Solid timber hoarding panels were erected to create a private, secure site boundary
  • Panels were fixed to block supports without permanent ground fixings, ideal for temporary urban site compounds
  • Timber neatly wrapped around the RB22 system, creating a seamless and professional aesthetic
  1. Installation Workflow
  • Day 1: Site set up, deliveries, and placement of RB22 barrierss along the compound perimeter
  • Day 2: Hoarding support blocks positioned and timber panels erected, ensuring plumb and level installation around corners and junctions
  • Day 3: Final adjustments, site clean up, and client walk round to confirm satisfaction and compliance

Installation Process

Day 1 – RB22 Deployment

  • Unloaded and positioned RB22 crash barriers to define the compound perimeter
  • Interlocked units to form a continuous line and ensured all units were level
  • Water filling completed to maximise stability in line with safety standards

Day 2 – Timber Hoarding Support Installation

  • Block supports positioned at regular centres to suit project constraints
  • Timber hoarding boards framed and secured to the blocks, including wrapping around barrier line transitions
  • All fixings and braces checked for alignment and rigidity

Day 3 – Completion and Client Handover

  • Final fitting around RB22 barriers for a neat finish
  • All edges, terminations and site access points signed off
  • Project safety check and client acceptance walkthrough

The Outcome

The combined RB22 crash barrier system and timber hoarding solution delivered:

  • A secure, compliant perimeter around the high rise works
  • Protection from vehicle interaction and clear segregation from footpaths
  • Neat, professional visual finish with timber seamlessly wrapping around the RB22 base
  • Minimal disruption and fast installation over 3 days

The client was highly satisfied with the quality of installation, attention to detail, and the visual integration of timber hoarding with the safety barrier system
