The Brief

We were recently appointed to supply and install RB22 crash tested barriers as part of a traffic management and workforce protection scheme on the A62 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Due to the nature of the works taking place and the high volume of live traffic, the client required a robust, compliant barrier system that would create a safe and clearly defined working zone behind the protection line. The project also came with strict site and safety requirements, including phased installation across both daytime and nighttime working periods.

The Solution

Following a full review of the site requirements, SafeSite Facilities proposed the installation of RB22 crash tested barriers, combined with mesh fencing, to deliver both vehicle impact protection and pedestrian/workforce segregation.

The solution included:

• Supply and installation of 70 x RB22 crash tested barriers
• Water-filling the barrier units to meet performance and stability requirements
• Installation of 45 x mesh fencing panels on top of the barrier line
• Creating a fully protected and compliant working zone behind the barrier system

This combined system provided both a physical crash protection barrier and a secure fenced working area, suitable for the live highway environment.

The Installation

The installation was carried out over two days by our experienced site teams, working to strict site rules and traffic management constraints.

• Night Shift: The barriers were water-filled, and the mesh fencing panels were installed on top of the system as part of the night works
• Day 2: Daytime installation of the RB22 barrier line and positioning of the system to form the protected work zone

Working across both daylight and night-time shifts required careful planning, coordination and strict adherence to safety procedures to ensure the works were completed without disruption and in full compliance with site requirements.

The Result

The completed installation delivered a fully compliant, crash-tested barrier and fencing solution that provided a safe, secure and clearly defined working area behind the protection line on the A62.

With 70 x RB22 barriers and 45 x mesh panels installed, the site now benefits from a highly visible, robust and reliable protection system that safeguards both the workforce and road users.

The client was extremely satisfied with the speed, professionalism and quality of the installation, and the solution met all safety and operational requirements for the project.
