RB22 Crash Barrier Installation in Caerphilly, Wales

The Brief

Our client required a robust, temporary crash barrier solution to protect a live worksite in Caerphilly, Wales. Due to ongoing traffic and the nature of the works being undertaken, the project called for a high visibility, crash tested barrier system to enhance safety on and around the site perimeter. In addition, the initial installation needed to take place out of hours during the night to minimise disruption and meet traffic management requirements.

The Challenge

The installation presented several logistical and safety challenges:

  • A nighttime initial installation was required to avoid peak traffic periods and maintain safe working conditions
  • The site required a fully crash tested solution capable of protecting a clearly defined work zone on a live route
  • Additional height and security were required through the installation of mesh panels, while still ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards

The Solution

Following a review of the site requirements, SafeSite Facilities proposed the installation of RB22 water filled crash barriers, complete with mesh panels, to provide vehicle impact protection and workforce segregation. The RB22 system is a highly visible, modular barrier that is TRL crash tested to BS EN1317 N1 standards and is well suited to temporary roadworks and traffic management schemes.

The solution included:

  • Supply and installation of 56 RB22 (red and white) crash barriers
  • Installation of 13 mesh panels to increase overall barrier height and site security
  • Out of hours nighttime installation to reduce disruption
  • Full water filling of barriers to ensure stability and performance

The Installation

The works were carefully planned to align with traffic management requirements and site safety constraints.

The initial installation was carried out during nighttime working hours, with the RB22 barriers positioned, connected and filled with water to create a continuous protective barrier line. The mesh panels were installed as part of the same operation to ensure the system was fully complete before the site returned to normal daytime traffic conditions.

Any final checks and minor adjustments were completed during daylight hours, ensuring the installation met the project specification and site layout requirements.

The Outcome

The completed installation provided a fully compliant crash barrier and mesh fencing solution, delivering a safe and clearly defined working area at the Caerphilly site. Carrying out the installation out of hours ensured minimal disruption to traffic, while the combined RB22 and mesh panel system delivered effective vehicle impact protection and enhanced site security.

The client was pleased with the planning and execution of the works, particularly the smooth nighttime installation and the high standard of safety achieved on site.
