Mass Barrier & Fencing Installation for Mexborough Town Centre Redevelopment Project

Project Overview

SafeSite Facilities was appointed by a longstanding client to deliver a large-scale mass barrier installation as part of the ongoing Mexborough Town Centre Redevelopment project in South Yorkshire.

The project forms part of a major regeneration programme designed to improve access, connectivity and road safety throughout Mexborough town centre, with significant infrastructure improvements planned along Greens Way and surrounding areas. The wider scheme will provide safer routes for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists while supporting the town’s long-term regeneration ambitions. To facilitate the construction works safely, our team supplied and installed 1,041 x Mass Barriers complete with Site Guard fencing, creating a secure segregation system between live traffic and the construction zone.

The Challenge

The installation took place on one of Mexborough’s busiest routes in and out of the town centre, with barriers required along both sides of the dual carriageway’s central reservation.

Working within a live highway environment presented several logistical and operational challenges, including:

• Maintaining safe working practices alongside live northbound and southbound traffic
• Restricted vehicle access throughout the route
• Existing infrastructure including traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and street lighting
• Limited on-site storage space
• Tight programme requirements to allow construction works to commence quickly

Traffic management was provided by the client, with reduced speed limits implemented throughout the works. However, space remained extremely limited, requiring careful planning and coordination from our installation team.,

Our Solution

SafeSite Facilities developed a progressive installation programme to ensure barriers were installed safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to road users.

Operating from an off-road site compound, our team delivered materials on a daily basis and installed the barriers in sections, working progressively along the carriageway to maintain programme deadlines.

The installation included:

• Supply and installation of 1,041 Mass Barriers
• Site Guard fencing fitted throughout the barrier line
• High-visibility strips fitted to alternating panels to enhance visibility for motorists
• Progressive installation along both sides of the carriageway
• Close coordination with existing traffic management arrangements
• Daily logistical planning to overcome restricted access and storage constraints

The completed system created a robust temporary safety barrier solution, providing a secure working area for construction personnel, plant and equipment while maintaining traffic flow through the town centre.

   

   

   

The Result

Despite the challenges associated with working on a live dual carriageway, SafeSite Facilities successfully completed the installation programme on schedule.

The barrier system provided the client with a safe and fully segregated work zone, enabling redevelopment works to commence quickly and safely. The addition of Site Guard fencing and high-visibility panels further enhanced site security and road user awareness throughout the project.
