Dug-In Ground Timber Hoarding Installation – Chichester

Client Overview:

SafeSite Facilities was appointed to deliver a secure timber hoarding solution on a rural site in Chichester, adjacent to an existing dry ditch. The client required a 2-metre-high timber barrier to prevent unauthorised access and fly-tipping while maintaining environmental sensitivity.

Project Scope:

The brief called for the installation of 68 metres of dug-in ground timber hoarding, running parallel to a dry ditch line. The design had to account for potential seasonal water flow and the presence of local wildlife, while aligning with the client’s branding and access control needs.

Site Constraints and Design Considerations:

The installation presented several challenges:

  • Environmental Sensitivity: Evidence of wildlife activity was present, including badger tracks and signs of nesting birds and reptiles. We also provide services for Newt & Reptile Wildlife Fencing to help with conservation efforts.
  • Seasonal Water Risk: While the ditch was dry at the time of works, the risk of future flow necessitated a considerate and stable installation approach.
  • Client Requirements: The hoarding had to stand 2 metres high and be robust enough to deter trespass and dumping, without compromising the rural landscape.

Hoarding Design & Installation:

SafeSite delivered a tailored hoarding solution using:

  • Panels: 18mm exterior-grade plywood
  • Framing: 100x50mm C24 treated timber
  • Posts: 150x75mm C24 timber, concreted to 600mm depth
  • Post Spacing: 0.95m centres for the initial 4.8m run, then 1.2m for the next 4.8m, followed by 1.6m centres for the remainder
  • Finish: Painted blue with a 180mm white top strip to reflect company branding

All materials were pre-treated and selected to endure outdoor conditions while minimising impact on the surrounding habitat. The hoarding was installed entirely by hand to reduce machinery use near sensitive ecological areas.

Outcome:

The installation was completed safely and efficiently, with no disruption to the surrounding ecology. The structure provides long-term protection from unauthorised access and fly-tipping, while blending into its rural setting.

Conclusion:

This Chichester project demonstrates how timber hoarding can be effectively deployed in sensitive, semi-rural locations. The final solution balanced security, ecological stewardship, and visual harmony; serving as a blueprint for future low-impact boundary projects.
