The cost of rural crime

It is estimated that the cost of rural theft cost the UK around £43.3m in 2020.

Despite this representing a decrease of 20% on the previous year it’s fair to say that 2020 was not an ordinary year.

The rules imposed by the national and local lockdowns during the pandemic certainly helped keep criminals out of the countryside however, large-scale organised crime, in the form of theft of expensive technology and farm machinery remained high.

Security challenges

The pandemic also brought about increased security issues for rural landowners, particularly around public rights of way, as many took to the countryside for their daily exercise during the coronavirus outbreak.

Some of the challenges raised included increased use of footpaths that run through, or close to, farms as well as an increased risk to livestock as more people were walking their dogs in the countryside.

Reducing rural crime and antisocial behaviour

There’s no doubt that increased security on farms and land can support a reduction in crime and antisocial behaviour in rural areas.
